HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — On Wednesday, a COVID-19 testing event was canceled at the last minute by the testing company itself due to shipping delays.
EZ Testing is the private company currently administering the free PCR and rapid tests at Harlingen Sports Complex.
Administrator Joe Flores said there was internal miscommunication within his COVID-19 testing team, causing a false cancellation.
“There were people waiting there at the sports complex in Harlingen. We were delayed and there was miscommunication with the time and date,” Flores said.
Flores said the miscommunication was partly due to delays in shipping materials.
“And other issues that are lingering with shortage of supplies and shortage of labor and shipments just taking a lot longer to get here,” Flores said.
The city of Harlingen announced on its Facebook page and website that EZ Testing had canceled the event, but Flores said that after resolving their own issue, they continued testing until 5 p.m.
“We immediately contacted the city of Harlingen to let them know we were on our way,” Flores said.
Flores added that they would continue testing in Harlingen until January 17 or while supplies last.
“We have a written agreement to be there in the town of Harlingen,” Flores said.
Flores explained that their testing labs are located at the Alamo, but cautioned that delays in test results should be expected.
“We have about 5 to 6 people per vehicle. Obviously the influx of tests going to the lab is delaying some results,” Flores said.
According to the city of Harlingen’s public information officer, Irma Garza, the city will no longer promote COVID-19 testing sites through private companies such as EZ Testing.
